Trip Overview // November 14-25, 2024
Addis Ababa - Great Ethiopian Run International 10K: Start and end your trip in Ethiopia’s capital city, Addis Ababa. Dive into Ethiopia’s rich culture of food, music, coffee, art, and history. Be part of Africa’s largest road race and Ethiopia’s biggest street party! Elite runners and casual walkers and joggers welcome - we are partnering with the Great Ethiopian Run to create a memorable experience, including an optional “shake out” run on Mt. Entoto, famous training grounds for elite Ethiopian runners and casual joggers alike.
Bekoji: Head to Bekoji, home some of the the world’s greatest Olympic long distance runners. Join the GGRF Athletic Scholars and Coach Fatiya for a training session — or just observe from the sidelines in wonder! — get to know the GGRF families and community, visit the local market, and learn what makes this high-altitude rural town so special. Discover why running & education are such a powerful tool to empower and meet the girls who are changing the trajectory of adolescence in their community!
Bale Mountain National Park: A newly designated UNESCO World Heritage site, this beautiful and unique landscape was shaped by ancient lava outpourings, glaciation and the dissection by the Great Rift Valley. It features volcanic peaks, sweeping valleys, lakes, lush forests, deep gorges and waterfalls. With experienced local guides from Simien Eco Tours, we will trek and camp in the park, maybe catching a glimpse of animals unique to the region, including the Ethiopian Wolf and Mountain Nyala.
Trip Itinerary // November 14-25, 2024
Girls Gotta Run is offering the chance for our international supporters to visit Ethiopia this fall and run with our Athletic Scholars – and thousands of Ethiopians – in the Great Ethiopian Run in Addis!
We will then visit our Bekoji program, have a chance to run with our Athletic Scholars there, and see our programs at work.
Finally, we will visit the Bale Mountain National Park in southern Ethiopia, a newly-designated World Heritage Site.
This trip is for everyone who has a sense of adventure and cares about empowering girls. While not a luxury trip – we will camp part of the time – non-runners are welcome!
