These Girls Chose to Attend Summer School?!

As we all know, education globally was disrupted during the pandemic. For our student athletes in Ethiopia, that disruption was serious. So we decided to take steps to address the learning lost during the months that classes, and our programs, were not operating at full capacity.

For the first time in Girls Gotta Run history, in July 2022, we are offering optional summer tutoring at our program at APGS in Soddo. The tutoring involves 8 hours per week of classes in 4 core subjects. We were a bit surprised that EVERY SINGLE ONE OF OUR 62 GIRLS CHOSE TO COME TO SUMMER SCHOOL! Their families are also supportive - enthusiastic, in fact!

This summer program built on a spring effort to provide extra tutoring for 12th and 8th grade girls in preparation for national and regional exams. See a photo below of our 8th graders after they took the Regional Exam in early July!

We believe the interest in our optional tutoring is a testament to the absolute dedication these girls have to pursuing a better life through education, even when faced with obstacles hard for some of us to imagine. We are determined to match their dedication with our own by continuing to invest in girls who are empowering themselves through education and running!
