The Malala Fund Recognizes GGRF Athletic Scholar, Burke Girma, as a 2020 Game Changer!

Meet Burke Girma, a 16-year-old runner from Bekoji, Ethiopia and GGRF athletic scholar. Burke lives on a small farm with her mother and four siblings. Between studying, training, and helping her mother at the market, she dreams of becoming a doctor.

In Ethiopia, 95% of girls begin their education but only 10% complete through 12th grade. We’re on a mission to change that. Through our athletic scholarship program, girls like Burke receive full tuition for their primary and secondary education, train to run as a foundation for developing personal agency, and learn the life skills they need to navigate adolescence and early adulthood.

Malala Yousafzai, a global education activist and the youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate, co-founded the Malala Fund to help ensure that girls receive an education. GGRF is proud to have Burke featured in the Malala Fund’s series on female athletes around the world who defy convention on and off the field. When you give to GGRF programs, you ensure that Ethiopian girls like Burke are able to live happy, safe, and productive lives. Consider a gift today by visiting girlsgottarun.org/donatetoday.
